Pass charter changes on ballot with your vote

Charter revisions can be additions, deletions or clarifications to the governing documents of our county.

This year we have some of each being presented to the voters. All are intended to help make the Maui County Charter fit the changing needs of our growing population, escalating budget, and increasing need for social responsibility.

The electorate has an opportunity to implement changes that can make our government more responsive to the will of the people, thereby spending our tax dollars more cautiously. Many times, the divisive issues and unwarranted expenses that made news were caused by provisions of an outdated charter, not intentional malfeasance.

The seven proposals on the ballot are those which Maui County Council has already vetted and approved by a supermajority. These are being submitted to the electorate because it is only voters that can change the charter.

Foremost among the amendments on the ballot is the inclusion of an office of managing director to oversee day-to-day functioning of the county. While not all departments will fall under their purview, most will. And it is in those departments that qualified heads will be the central focus of more efficient and competent delivery of services to us all.

Imagine an excellent employee who leaves because they will never attain the political appointment to department director. Or the inverse. A director doing an excellent job that has to resign when there is a change in the mayor’s office.

It is up to you to implement these changes with your vote.
